Boss Level Shootout strips a shooter down to its most interesting part: the boss fights. Each stage is a single large opponent with a pattern to learn, a weak point to find and a small arena to survive in. There is no filler between them.
That makes it more of a puzzle game than a shooter. The first attempt at any boss is reconnaissance; the second is where you actually play.
